Sydney, September 16 There was a new protest today

from the "save the forests" people. The following

is from their press conference:

""Australia has the worst per capita record in

world greenhouse gas emissions. We currently clear more

land than any other developed nation, placing us in the

top 5 land clearing nations on the planet. 'We have no

right to trumpet our deeds on protecting the

environment' stated Glen Klatovsky, NSW Wilderness

Society spokesperson.

"The fact is that Australia has one of the most

biodiverse set of ecosystems on earth. Yet we are

clearfelling vast tracts of our last great native

forests, home to the majority of the endangered species.

Australia is on a path to increasing its international

lead in mammal extinction rates.

This Fed'l Govt. has actively pursued the development of

further uranium mining, with the promotion of the

Jabiluka Uranium Mine in the center of Kakadu Nat'l Park

receiving resou ding internt'l condemnation.

Even natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef, which

earns Australia hundredsd of millions of dollars a year,

is under serious threats from land based pollution, over-

fishing and the Crown of Thorns starfish. Threats which

the current federal government has failed to take

seriously. ""
